Change is one of those things that we do all the time without thinking about it, yet often when we do stop to think about it, we resist it.
Think about it, in our day to day lives, we could make several changes each day, from our outfit choice to the route we take to work, to the food we eat, etc and we get on with them quite seamlessly. When we are told or asked to change something, oftentimes we fight back, not wanting to. Now, I realise I am being quite simplistic but few of us would wear the same outfit for days in a row or eat the same meal three times a day, seven days a week. This means that we do do change! Not only are we able to but we probably see the importance of it too…certainly in these situations. No one wants to be accused of smelling bad because they have been in the same outfit for weeks.
I suspect that when we are in control of the change, we are generally okay with it, maybe because we can stop it at any time. But when change is being put upon us and we have little choice and even less control, we resist. Suddenly our inner rebel comes flying out; we want explanations, we want justification, we want to know why we are being asked to make the change……
And that is just it, isn’t it? Before we accept or commit to the change, we want to know what is in it for us.
Change is not necessarily a bad thing, but to know that, we need to understand it better.
